Carole and her husband Verne King returned to their hotel room late at night. They were at a stock-car race in Kalispell, Mont. The couple had no idea that what they were about to discover was going to make their heart race with worry.
The Kings owned a seven-year-old Border Collie named Katie. Katie was supposed to be in the room, but when the couple reached there, she was not there. The couple rushed to the front desk to ask the attendant if she knew anything about Katie. The attendant told the couple that she saw a freaked out dog a few hours back and that the dog was rushing out of the front door.
Kalispell had a strong thunderstorm that night. Most probably, the storm spooked Katie, and she somehow unlatched the door and ran out of the hotel.
Carole and Verne were devastated. It was a relatively small city with a population of only twenty-three thousand people. The town was in the middle of fields and forests, and finding Katie could prove to be quite an uphill task.
Katie could be anywhere, but the couple did not think of giving up for even a fraction of a second and immediately started searching for Katie. The couple kept searching for 56 days continuously without any luck. They also used gadgets such as night goggles and animal tracking cameras.
Carol had a job as a postal carrier back in Spokane. As the search went on for several days, it was time for Carol to make a decision about joining her job or keep on being a part of a desperate search for Katie. Carol opted to quit her job.
On the fifty-seventh day of the search, Carol got a tip from a resident of the area. The resident told Carol that the dog she is looking for seems to be in his backyard. Carol and a friend rushed to the place, but the dog had left the site. Carol started searching in the nearby area.
A couple was out there for a walk; they told Carol that they had seen a Border Collie under a nearby tree. There she was! Carol called Katie’s name, and the dog responded with undeniable excitement. Katie came running into Carol’s arm. The search finally succeeded.
The Kings showed relentless determination to find their dog Katie, and it paid off in the end. Because of their untiring efforts, Katie was home.
