Hope for Paws, an animal organization based in Los Angeles, California, got a call for help regarding a homeless pit bull who had been seen wandering a residential block for an entire week, with nobody looking after her.
Hope for Paws volunteer JoAnn Wiltz and Jacqueline Artecona visited the location to look for the pit bull and found her resting underneath a car parked in front of someone’s home, away from the heat of the sun.
Residents reported that animal control officers had been by a few days before to catch the pittie, but they did not succeed.
The women tried to lure the pit bull out from under the vehicle with a few bits of hamburger. The dog did come out—but then she ran over to the next door neighbor’s yard, scared of the rescuers.
When JoAnn and Jacqueline realized the pittie would only run farther away from them the more they attempted to get close to her, they decided to set up a trap to capture her.
They put down a large cage on the sidewalk and placed a juicy hamburger on one end. Meanwhile, the women stayed out of the way while they waited for the pit bull to smell the meat.
The pittie did eventually walk by the trap, sniffing curiously at the food. She entered by the open end, slowly approaching the treat—and just like that, the dog was secure inside the cage.
The canine, whom JoAnn and Jacqueline named Acacia, was a bit surprised to hear the cage door clanging shut behind her, but she seemed more intent on eating the burger. She wasn’t too distressed, either, to find herself with nowhere to run.
Acacia was extremely well-behaved, staying calm and quiet at the vet. They found a sizeable perianal mass under her tail, which had caused her some stomach problems, and a smaller mass under her eyelid.
The pittie had to spend a few days at the hospital hooked to an IV line until she was well enough for surgery. After doctors excised the lumps, San Diego-based animal rescue It’s The Pits stepped in to foster Acacia.
The adorable pit bull loves playing and snuggling with her humans. Acacia will surely make an excellent pet for any dog lover!
