Kathryn Hartwig received a call from a dog breeder that needed urgent help because she noticed that one of the newborn puppy’s back feet was turning black. In addition, the pup, Etta, stopped nursing from her mother, so the woman decided to rush to the emergency vet where Kathryn worked.
The doctors examined Etta and believed that the poor puppy would not make it through the night. Kathryn recalled her heart was pounding nonstop while holding Etta in her hand because she knew she did not want to let Etta down and give up on her without even trying to save her.
Kathryn knew that it was either she and her colleagues do everything they could to save Etta or settle for euthanasia. However, she felt it would be unfair just to give up on Etta, so she and her coworkers did everything they could to help the animal recover.
Kathryn noticed that Etta eventually started eating independently after a couple of weeks of nurturing her back to health. Etta showed everyone that she had the will to keep going, and Kathryn and her coworkers could not help but feel relieved seeing how much of a fighter the little pup is.
Etta eventually started getting stronger with each passing day, trying to wiggle her way around and learning how to walk despite having bandages on her back legs. Kathryn recalled that Etta would take one little wobbly step, fall, and try her best to get up again.
Etta successfully learned how to walk independently after a week of trying and finally began running around like a real active puppy. Kathryn initially planned on fostering Etta until she found her fur-ever home, but she ended up adopting her when she realized that Etta was already where she truly belonged.
