A shelter director was thinking of a creative fundraiser, and she decided that a wedding between two loving pooches amid twinkling lights would be memorable. The nuptials not only helped more animals in need, but it also celebrated the dogs’ sweet friendship.
Christine McNeely, Humane CNY director, first met a chihuahua named Miguel at the shelter during her first week on the job. Miguel was just a pup then, and Christine only intended to foster him for a few days.
She couldn’t resist Miguel’s charm, though, and ended up adopting him. A year and a half later, another chihuahua named Lola arrived at Humane CNY, and Miguel took her under his wing.
Lola used to be nervous and terrified of everything around her. Christine presumes that the chihuahua had experienced abuse before, which caused her to lose her faith in humans.
Thankfully, Miguel was there to show Lola that the world can be a fun and happy place. When Christine noticed the two chihuahuas growing closer by the day, she knew she would soon be unable to keep them apart. As such, she also adopted Lola.
Their dogs’ friendship deepened in their new home, and Miguel’s love helped Lola blossom into a confident and friendly pooch. She used to be skittish around people, but now Lola joins Miguel in greeting shelter visitors at the Humane CNY lobby.
Miguel and Lola’s wedding took place at Liverpool’s annual Lights on the Lake event at Onondaga Lake Park. This attraction features impressive holiday displays that guest can enjoy with their pets and loved ones.
Ringo, a therapy dog, presided over the ceremony. Former Humane CNY dogs served as Miguel and Lola’s bridesmaid and groomsmen, while two shelter puppies were designated as the flower girl and the ring bearer.
All the proceeds from the event and the Lights on the Lake Dog Walk went to Humane CNY. Watch Miguel and Lola’s adorable wedding ceremony here:
