You can have lots of fun training your dog to follow hand signals and it is not as hard as you might think. Just grab a handful of dog food pieces and your ready to go. You can find many different ways to teach this to your dog and below you will find one of the easiest methods.
It is important to be sure that your dog is solid on understanding and obeying your voice commands then teaching them the hand signal that goes along with a particular command is a matter of consistent repetition and reward when the dog obeys, following your hand.
Later in this article you will see a log of some voice commands and hand signals that can work well together.
A good example of how the process works would be using the voice command “sit.” Assuming Fido puts his bottom to the ground as soon as you say “sit.” he is ready to move on to connecting the hand signal for sit with the voice command to “sit” Look below for examples of voice commands and hand gestures to go along with them. Once your dog hears the command and sees the hand signal at the same time he will obey and immediately upon his compliant behavior give him a kibble treat and a “good dog”. As stated earlier steady consistent repetition will produce consistent results.
You should continue to use a food and praise reward gradually stop using the voice command. Don’t try to move to fast but be consistent in your actions and training and you will gradually accomplish your goal.
When Fido consistently follows your hand signals gradually decrease the food treats and use ashuring vocal commands such as “good boy!” You will see your dog obeying hand signals in not time and you and Fido will amaze your friends and those you meet in the park.
Position Fido standing and facing you as you stand straight with arms by your side. If you are going to signal with your right hand hold kibble in your left hand. Bend your right elbow and bring your hand up to your shoulder while giving the verbal command sit. As soon as your dog obeys give a kibble treat with your left hand and praise him. Have him stand and repeat.
Put Fido in the sit position then with kibble in the right hand bring your hand down in front of his nose and as he follows your hand give the down command. He will go into the down position and you will give him the treat and praise. You can gradually move back a step at a time and he will follow your commands. Again over time discontinue the command and treats. He will follow signals your signals reliably over time.
Again place Fido standing and facing you. With treats in your left hand bring your right hand to your left shoulder, step back and say come. As your dog comes to you give a treat and praise. Gradually increase the distance and discontinue commands and the treats until he comes to you consistently.
Above all in your training keep it light, fun and make sure you and your dog have a great time! Be patient and you will see results.
